Why do I need a written contract?

Contracts come in varying shapes and sizes. I cannot overstate the importance of having a written contract. Not only is it a reference point for all parties but the parties are less likely to misunderstand their responsibilities. Have you ever had an occassion where you didn't feel the need for a written contract and why?
