How do you determine when it is time for business growth?

Sometimes it is hard to decide which stage of growth your business is in or to move from one stage to another. My Firm (www.kendricklaw.net) is currently in its start-up stage. However, soon it will be entering its growth stage where we will need to expand space, personnel and ideas. How do you or how did you determine when it was time to transition from the start-up stage to the growth stage?

  1. I run a small consulting practice with offices in Baltimore, Atlanta and DC and 10 co-workers. I started with just me in 2003. The work has always determined growth for us. Sometimes we're tempted to hire when we first get consistently busy. But I always add staff when the new work will pay for and provide a profit for the new co-worker. So if new projects just means that a few us will pick up additional work for awhile thats what we do.

We opened an office in Atlanta to service southern clients and make us more appealing to prospective clients. Technically we can service our clients from the Baltimore office. But we look stronger with multiple locations.
